Oak Brook, Ill.-based Ace Hardware Corp. recognized seven vendors for their superior commitment and service to the hardware cooperative, its retailers and customers at the 2014 Spring Convention and Exhibits held February 24-26 in Houston.

This year’s collection of Ace Vendor of the Year award winners are:

• Allway Tools, a premier manufacturer of paint sundries and specialized tools, based in the Bronx, N.Y.

Toronto-based Sears Canada is turning over the work currently performed at three internal Customer Contact Centres to IBM, the company announced.

Sears Canada says the move will "provide a significant upgrade in technology and processes." It will also cut about 1,345 jobs.

The Hillman Cos. agreed to buy Toronto-based fastener distributor H. Paulin & Co. for $103.7 million (C$103 million).

“We are excited to become an integral part of the Hillman organization,” said Richard Paulin, who will continue as president of the new division of Hillman Canada. “This acquisition joins two great and complementary industry leaders with over 140 years of combined fastener knowledge.”

The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2013.

Home Depot Canada held its annual "Meet the Buyer" day in Toronto on Nov. 7, an event that brought 22 small and medium manufacturers from Quebec and Ontario face-to-face with the retailer’s merchants.  Now in its third year, Meet the Buyer is a partnership between The Home Depot Canada, the Ontario Ministry of Economic Development and Innovation, and the Quebec Ministry of Economic Development, Innovation and Export Trade.

Annette Verschuren, the former president of Home Depot Canada and Asia, has joined a Toronto-based start-up that will commercialize energy storage technologies. Verschuren will serve as executive chair of NRStor Inc., a new company backed by Northwater Capital Management.

Toronto-based Canadian Tire Corp. has implemented a Vendor Management program from Soft Solutions, a provider of global intelligent retail systems.

The deployment of the ibs Referential Vendor Management solution started with ibs pricing and ibs promotions, followed by the deployment of the full version of ibs referential for retail organizations and product management (PIM, MDM).

Plans are underway near Toronto for a project called "Improve," described as a home renovation mall with diverse showrooms under one roof.

According to an article in the Globe and Mail, the project is the brainchild of a Ukrainian immigrant who found it difficult to make all the purchases involved in his own home renovation project.

According to an article in Canadian Business, Sears Canada laid off about 70 employees from its Toronto headquarters.

Sears Canada is 92% owned by Hoffman Estates, Ill.-based Sears Holdings, which reported a widened net loss in its recent third-quarter earnings report. Sears Canada comps declined 7.8% in the third quarter.
