The farm and ranch giant recorded its 19th straight quarter of year-over-year transaction count increases.

Brentwood, Tenn.-based Tractor Supply Co. posted sales and earnings gains in the fourth quarter and full year ended Dec. 29, riding the strength of its core categories, according to the company.

Fourth-quarter sales at the farm and ranch giant increased 3.7% to $1.29 billion, as comp-store sales increased 4.7%. Adjusted for an extra week in the prior year's fourth quarter, the company showed a 10.8% sales increase.

Brentwood, Tenn.-based Tractor Supply has announced a management succession plan to take effect Jan. 1.

Jim Wright, who was named CEO of Tractor Supply in 2004 and who took on the additional role of chairman in 2007, will be replaced by Gregory Sandfort, currently the company’s chief operating officer.

Despite a stagnant economy and drought conditions across large parts of the country, Brentwood, Tenn.-based Tractor Supply Co. reported sales and earnings growth.

The company posted second-quarter sales of $1.29 billion, up 9.6% from $1.18 billion in the same quarter last year.

The nation’s largest chain of farm and ranch specialty stores posted earnings of $106.6 million, up 8.3% from $91.2 million in the year-ago period.

Reacting quickly to an early spring, Brentwood, Tenn.-based Tractor Supply Co. said its first-quarter sales increased 22% to $1.02 billion.

Same-store sales for the quarter increased 11.5%. The country’s largest farm-and-ranch retailer, which will release its full first-quarter earnings results April 25, said the same-store sales increase was driven, in part, by early spring weather in 2012.

Brentwood, Tenn.-based Tractor Supply Co. continued its hot streak with a fourth quarter sales increase in excess of 20%.

Net sales hit $1.24 billion for the company in the 14 weeks ended Dec. 31., up 20.1% from the 13-week period a year ago. For the full year, sales increased 16.3% to $4.23 billion.

Net income was up 40.4% to $70.5 million  for the quarter, and up 32.6% to $222.7 million for the year.

Brentwood, Tenn.-based Tractor Supply Co. has promoted Alexander Stanton to senior VP supply chain. In his new role, Stanton will handle logistics, transportation, distribution centers, inventory management and pricing for the 1,054-store retailer.

He joined the company in 2006 as VP finance and was later named senior VP finance and strategy. In his new role, he will report to Gregory Sandfort, president and chief merchandising officer.

Tax services giant H&R Block has named Home Depot's Marvin Ellison and Tractor Supply's James Wright as prospective members of its board of directors.

Ellison, 46, is Home Depot's executive VP U.S. stores. He has been with the Atlanta-based home improvement retailer since 2002, and previously held management positions with Target Corp. 

Wright, 61, is CEO of Brentwood, Tenn.-based Tractor Supply Co. He was also CEO of Tire Kingdom.

Gas prices are high, too -- rising to $3.74 per gallon of regular, compared with $3.62 last week.

With existing-home sales slipping to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.88 million, all three housing starts and home sales dials are running behind the paces set last month and last year.

That picture of poor performance stands in contrast to the Home Channel Stock Roundup, which shows all 10 companies tracked running ahead of last month and last year. Tractor Supply Co. leads the way -- up more than 90% from its year-ago share value.

The national unemployment rate unexpectedly slipped one-tenth of a percentage point to 8.9% in February.

But the big movement among consumer data was in gas prices, up 15 cents to a national average of $3.50 for regular gallon of gas. If gas prices continue to rise, expect consumer confidence to slip from its February reading of 70.4.

Tractor Supply Company reported that net sales for the fourth quarter increased 19.7% to $1.03 billion from $862.5 million in the prior year's fourth quarter. Same-store sales increased 13.1% compared with a 0.7% increase in the prior-year period.

Net income for the quarter was $50.2 million, or 67 cents per diluted share, compared with $37.3 million, or 51 cents per diluted share, in the prior year's fourth quarter.
