Extreme Heavy Duty Construction Adhesive from Liquid Nails has opened up new lines of distribution to participating True Value and Ace Hardware stores. 

The product has already been available at Lowe’s and Home Depot.

The HCN Big Four Report, published in the July/August issue, included several comments from independent retailers who were interviewed during recent markets and conventions.

Brent Burger, True Value chairman and owner of five Campbell's True Value locations in Maine, was honored recently by the NRHA as one of its three industry "Top Guns" of 2014.

Setting Burger apart is his track record of promoting growth for the chain of hardware stores, as well as his commitment to his community as president of the True Value Foundation.

Burger has been on the True Value board since 2007 and has been serving as chair since 2013. Before joining the company in 1999, he worked for Starbucks Corporation and TCBY Enterprises, Inc.

Pointing to success of an expanded farm, ranch, auto and pet assortments, Chicago-based True Value posted gains in gross billings and revenues for the first quarter ended March 29.

The co-op reported gross billings of $460.1 million for the quarter, up 3.6% from $444.2 million for the same period a year ago. Revenue was $331.5 million, an increase of 6.0%.

The cooperative posted a quarterly net margin of $0.9 million, up slightly from $0.4 million a year ago.

Adam Schoelkopf of Bedford True Value Hardware in Bedford, N.Y., recently accepted a True Value Best Hardware Store in Town award on behalf of the store.

A total of 13 stores were recognized by the co-op during its Spring & Rental Reunion held in Atlanta. 

“These are talented business people who work incredibly hard to bring their communities the best service and shopping experiences possible,” said True Value president and CEO John Hartmann.

Atlanta – An information-packed general session here at the True Value Reunion included up-close interviews with a new slate of senior executives and an update on the co-op’s long-running strategic planning effort.

And there was also a little comedy on the stage, as actors impersonated shoppers experiencing BBTSD, or “big box traumatic stress disorder.”

You meet some interesting people in the home improvement industry. Here’s another one: Jared Littmann, the 41-year-old youth sports coach; lawyer; Annapolis, Md., assemblyman; owner of K&B True Value in Annapolis; and — most recently — True Value board member.

Chicago -- During his first general session speech to the assembled body of True Value dealers, CEO John Hartmann expressed a willingness to embrace change.

Chicago -- Here is a statistic that is raising optimism within the True Value pet department: 72% of pet owners consider their pet a member of their family. And what's more, 70% of dog owners think their dog understands how they are feeling better than most people do.

It's no secret that home owners love their pets, but the category is attractive to independent hardware stores for more retail-centric reasons, according to panelists on a True Value seminar here at the co-op's 2013 Fall Reunion.

True Value’s Kevin Rewerts, divisional VP of merchandising for automotive-pet-farm & ranch, said the co-op’s five-year plan to grow the farm-and-ranch-and-pet business by $100 million is on track. 

In an interview with HCN, Rewerts added that the pet division is taking on a retailer’s-best-friend role at the co-op, and has emerged as the fastest growing category at True Value.

True Value has announced the retirement of president and CEO Lyle Heidemann, effective May 31. John Hartmann has been appointed as the company’s new president and CEO, following the retirement of Heidemann. Heidemann will continue to serve True Value through the end of 2013 as an adviser.

Weaver Lumber in Redding, Calif., is currently an LBM-focused yard operating in a 10,000-sq.-ft. building previously occupied by Moss Lumber. But according to the news report, owner Brent Weaver intends adds a strong DIY component.

Chicago-based True Value Co. recognized 13 True Value hardware stores, selected from each of the co-op’s retail regions, as winners of its sixth annual “Best Hardware Store in Town” program.

Among the top 10 companies on the 2012 Home Channel News Industry Scoreboard, none grew faster than Brentwood, Tenn.-based Tractor Supply. The farm-and-ranch lifestyle provider showed a 16.3% sales increase and an overall ranking of seventh on the Top 300 retailer list.

Rural King Supply of Mattoon, Ill., moved up the list from 25th to 22nd. Also moving up the rankings were Atwood Ranch & Home of Enid, Okla., and Bomgaars Supply of Sioux City, Iowa.

When Mike Clark, True Value’s senior VP and chief merchandising officer, talks about growth areas, he points to canning, he points to pet food. He points to strength in these warm times, of anything that moves cool air through a ouse, or moves water around the yard.

But Clark seems most excited about initiatives in farm and ranch.
