Palo Alto-based home renovation platform Houzz has crossed the pond, launching a site focused on users in the United Kingdom.

Houzz allows homeowners to connect with design and architecture professionals and each other for their renovation projects. Now the company’s million U.K. users will be able to find professionals and source nearby materials for their renovation projects

Timber customers in the United Kingdom will now be able to avail themselves of LP's SolidStart Simply Better Stud. 

LP recently launched the product across the pond, touting its ability to minimize plasterboard cracks, nail popping, wall rippling and skirting & cornice gaps.

The Simply Better Stud promises greater uniformity and consistency, greater dimensional stability and added performance. The straight design also reduces the need for a mid-height wall noggin that's normally used with timber studs, acccording to the company.

Lifetime Brands, a leading global provider of branded kitchenware, tableware and other products used in the home, is seeing the results of its aggressive growth strategy -- which included the acquisition of four businesses during the period -- in the first quarter ended March 31.

Consolidated net sales for the quarter were $118.4 million, soaring 20% from $98.7 million for the corresponding period in 2013.

IKEA is taking a big step in pushing solar panels further toward the mainstream through the launch of a new test sale in Britain.

The retailer has begun selling residential solar panels in its Southampton store, with other locations in Britain due to start selling them in the coming months. IKEA has plans to eventually sell to other countries as well, though Britain was a strategic choice for a test program due to its moderate electricity costs and government incentives for promoting solar energy.

Valspar Corp. is set to become the flagship paint for British retailer B&Q, according to an announcement from the Minneapolis-based manufacturer. Valspar will supply a full selection of its premium paint to all 350 B&Q locations in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Previously, B&Q's stores offered primarily ready-mix Valspar paints in a smaller assortment of colors and textures. The new retail concept will be rolled out to all locations throughout 2013.

Creative Tops is a wholesale provider of tableware, kitchenware and giftware products in the United Kingdom. CTFE is based in Hong Kong and provides sourcing and other services for Creative Tops and its customers.

Denver -- Ace Hardware stores are showing strong same-store sales, while the distributor's wholesale sales are running ahead of the budgeted 3% growth, CEO Ray Griffith told dealers.

Speaking Saturday morning at the General Session of the co-op's 2011 Convention & Exhibits here at the Colorado Convention Center, Griffith said data from about 3,000 Ace stores show a 2.4% comparable-store sales increase over last year. In each of the last four months, the stores showed comp-sales increases of more than 4%.

Philadelphia -- True Value Co. CEO Lyle Heidemann presented some positive numbers during the co-op's Fall Market general session, as he encouraged members to remain visible to their customers.

Speaking here Friday morning at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, site of the company's fall market, Heidemann pointed to positive recent sales gains across the co-op. Since the third week of May -- a starting point selected because it was the beginning of this year's delayed spring -- retail sales are up 4.3% at True Value, with every department positive, he said.

In addition to glossy case studies of growing members, Chicago-based True Value Co.'s freshly released 2010 Annual Report forecasts a sixth straight "consistent patronage dividend" in 2011.

The report's letter to retailers, co-signed by CEO Lyle Heidemann and chairman Brian Webb, also forecasts about 40 line reviews this year. Another forecast is for an additional 1.25 million sq. ft. of Destination True Value retail space, up from the 900,000 sq. ft. that was added in 2010.

Bristol, Tenn. -- A carpenter from Halifax, England, outlasted some 16,000 tradesmen to win $10,000 in the finals of a tradesman skills competition held at the Bristol Motor Speedway during race day on Sunday. 

The event was part of a larger campaign by Irwin Tools to elevate and support the often underappreciated tradesman, according to organizers. "Tradesmen keep America running strong, and this is our way of saying thanks for what they do for our country," said Curt Rahilly, VP marketing for Irwin Tools.

Orlando, Fla. -- At True Value Co., a national gift card program and a re-launched True Value Rewards Program are among the marketing moves designed to drive revenue and profit for members, according to Carol Wentworth, VP marketing for the Chicago-based co-op.

The gift cards represent a move -- along with the co-op's launch of e-commerce in November -- to better compete in today's world of retailing, she said, and deliver what the customer expects.

Orlando, Fla. -- Chicago-based hardware co-op True Value Co. reported wholesale revenues increased 2.3% in the fourth quarter of 2010, and retail revenues increased 4.6% for the quarter.

CEO Lyle Heidemann delivered the preliminary results to True Value members during the General Session of the co-op's 2011 Spring & Rental Market held here in Orlando. 

"Our fourth quarter results should give us some momentum going into 2011," Heidemann said.

Wolseley, the parent company of U.S. plumbing distributor Ferguson, has announced plans to move its official headquarters to Switzerland in order to reduce its tax burden in England. If approved by shareholders, the London-based firm would create a holding company called “New Wolseley” but continue to employ nearly 10,000 people in the U.K.

New Wolseley would still be listed and traded on the London Stock Exchange, according to the proposal.
