Looking to grow through new customers and new products, Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Universal Forest Products posted double-digit sales growth for the fourth quarter and the full year.

Looking to grow through new customers and new products, Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Universal Forest Products posted double-digit sales growth for the fourth quarter and the full year. 

Sales for the quarter increased 11.5% to $470.8 million. However, UFP's loss widened in the quarter to $1.9 million, compared with a loss of $1.7 million in the same quarter last year.

Universal Forest Products closed on the acquisition of Custom Caseworks, a high-precision business-to-business manufacturer of engineered wood products.

Universal Forest Products has announced that one of its subsidiaries is expanding the company’s industrial business in the northwest United States with the acquisition of the operating assets of Nepa Pallet and Container Co., a manufacturer of pallets, containers and bins for agricultural and industrial customers.

Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Universal Forest Products posted third-quarter net earnings of $5.6 million, up from net earnings of $2.6 million in the same quarter last year.

Net sales of $468.9 million in the third quarter of 2011 were down 2.4% from net sales of $480.6 million for the same period of last year.

Universal Forest Products has named David Tutas as general counsel of the corporation. He succeeds Matthew Missad, who was appointed CEO earlier this year.

Tutas joined Universal as an attorney in 2003. In 2007, he was named director of the legal department at Universal. Before he joined the company, Tutas was an attorney with the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based firm of Nantz, Litowich, Smith & Girard.

Net sales totaled $544.1 million, down 15% from net sales of $638.6 million for the same period of 2010. Sales were affected by weak consumer spending on larger-ticket home-improvement items.

Universal Forest Products Inc. (UFPI) has announced “cost reductions that will result in annualized savings of $10 million” due to weak sales during the first five months of 2011. The Grand Rapids, Mich. company did not specify where or when these cuts will take place; they do not include one-time charges related to reductions, however.

Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Universal Forest Products has announced that CEO Michael Glenn is retiring due to health reasons and to make way for new leadership to "build on Universal's strengths and prepare for future opportunity." The board of directors is currently in the process of evaluating candidates for the position. Glenn, who was appointed CEO in 2006, has agreed to stay on until a new CEO is named.
