Las Vegas — In the not-too-distant future, 84 Lumber sees itself giving its potential customers two bids — one regular bid, and one bid consisting exclusively of American-made products.

When it happens, builders may be surprised at the similarity in total costs, according to Jeff Nobers, VP marketing for the Eighty Four, Pa.-based pro dealer.

The all-American bid system is one of the ideas stemming from 84 Lumber's new initiative to encourage builders and consumers to buy American when building — called "We Build American."

Eight vendors of the paint giant were recognized for product innovation, performance, service and sales.

Cleveland-based Sherwin-Williams recognized its top product partners at the company’s annual Vendor of the Year Awards ceremony, held at the Paint Stores Group 2013 National Sales Meeting in Nashville, Tenn.

“The performance of these vendors was nothing short of outstanding,” said Pete Sedlak, VP marketing and purchasing, Sherwin-Williams. “We are proud to recognize these suppliers for their industry-leading innovations, sales growth and incredible support for our company and customers.”

Wood Resources, a company that makes wood panels for residential and commercial construction, has appointed Kurt Liebich as president and CEO, as well as group executive for wood products for parent company Atlas Holdings. Liebich will also continue in his current role as president and CEO of RedBuilt, Atlas’ wood-based structural solutions company.

Andrea Freeman, the former VP marketing and brand management at Newell Rubbermaid, has joined Aaron’s, the rent-to-own retailer, as VP marketing. Freeman will report directly to Aaron’s chairman, president and CEO Ronald Allen and be responsible for marketing strategy and implementation, marketing communications, research and planning, business development, and coordination with sales and other business partners on strategic initiatives.

Orchard Supply Hardware Stores has announced continuing progress with key operating and financial initiatives under its repositioning strategy:

• The company reduced its debt by more than $90 million during the past 12 months and secured financing for store remodels, primarily by executing multiple sale-leaseback transactions;

• Orchard refinanced its Senior Secured Credit Facility in October. As of Oct. 27, the company had about $64 million of cash and credit available;

Handy Hardware Wholesales San Antonio market, Aug. 10 to 12, saw an attendance increase of 11.2% over 2011, the Houston-based hardware co-op reported. 

Handy gave away six Toyota Tundra trucks during the market weekend, and it expects warehouse sales from the event will be at an all-time high, said Mickey Schulte, VP marketing and purchasing.

Founded in 1898 in Johnson City, TN, Harris Wood is one of the oldest hardwood flooring companies in the United States of America.

Window and door manufacturer Marvin has promoted Brett Boyum to the position of VP marketing.

Boyum has been with Marvin for nearly 15 years, most recently as director of marketing for both Marvin and its sister brand, Integrity Windows and Doors. He succeeds Tom Angelis, who is retiring.

“As a key member of our marketing team, Brett has led the development and implementation of many of our most successful products and programs,” said Susan Marvin, president of Marvin Windows and Doors.

During Lowe's annual conference Tuesday, senior VP marketing and advertising Tom Lamb defined the company's target customer by first breaking down home improvement consumers into four distinct groups.

Lowe's target, he said, is on the two largest spending groups, together called "creators."

Mary-Jo Salzburg, the former director of marketing at Johnson Controls, has re-joined Member Insurance Agency as VP marketing.

Salzburg’s 15 years of marketing experience includes media strategy, database marketing, advertising, public relations and trade shows. Since 2008, she has been the marketing communications program manager for Johnson Controls, a Milwaukee-based provider of equipment, controls and services for heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration. The company also provides products for the automotive industry.

Chicago -- Decking vendors of all persuasions shared McCormick Place with suppliers of other remodeling materials as the Deck Expo and the Remodeling Show joined their events this year. Exterior siding and PVC/composite decking seemed to dominate the floor, although a large wood pavilion showcased cedar, redwood and pressure-treated lumber.

Boucherville, Quebec-based RONA, the largest Canadian distributor and retailer of hardware, renovation and gardening products, announced the appointment of Michelle Laberge as senior director of communications and public affairs. 

She will report to Claude Bernier executive VP marketing and customer innovations.

Laberge joins RONA from MSL Canada, a public relations agency where she was VP for its consumer division, representing clients such as Procter & Gamble, Indigo Chapters and Fujifilm

Across the country, and across a broad spectrum of industries, advertisements sporting mobile bar codes are becoming an increasingly familiar sight. QR codes — quick response codes — are the most common of a few types of bar codes that consumers can scan using a pre-downloaded smartphone app. The bar codes may appear on anything from posters to packaging to catalogs and, when scanned, lead consumers to a specific set of information, often through a mobile website.

Previously, Wierengo served as director of marketing for Tapco.

Southbridge, Mass.-based Hyde Tools introduced a point-of-purchase display for a product it calls "the ultimate junk drawer tool."

The 10-5/16 in. by 9-3/16 in. cut-case style merchandiser shows a full-size diagram of the 14-in-1 multi-tool's functions -- including the storage and use of four screwdriver bits in the handle.

Bristol, Tenn. -- A carpenter from Halifax, England, outlasted some 16,000 tradesmen to win $10,000 in the finals of a tradesman skills competition held at the Bristol Motor Speedway during race day on Sunday. 

The event was part of a larger campaign by Irwin Tools to elevate and support the often underappreciated tradesman, according to organizers. "Tradesmen keep America running strong, and this is our way of saying thanks for what they do for our country," said Curt Rahilly, VP marketing for Irwin Tools.
