KB Home named Jon Adler to the role of president, D.C. Metro division. He joins the company from McLean, Virginia-based The Georgelas Group, where he was a partner and creator of Bryton Homes, of which he served as president and CEO.

Entering new markets, Winchester, Virginia-based wood-alternative decking manufacturer Trex reported a record third-quarter performance.

The company’s net sales increased 32.2% to $95.5 million in the third quarter. Net income swung to a profit of $8.9 million, compared to a net loss of $15.3 million in the same quarter last year.

Trex’s results for the 2014 quarter reflect a $5.4 million increase in income taxes driven by the return to a normal tax rate after exiting its tax valuation allowance at year-end 2013.

Stanley Black & Decker is donating more than $120,000 worth of tools and equipment to four new ToolBanks this month, organizations that provide tools to nonprofits and volunteers and help them cut costs.

The donation will go toward building up an initial inventory of tools to be put to use in various community improvement projects in the four new locations: Houston, Portland, Oregon; Phoenix; and Richmond, Virginia.

Toano, Virginia-based Lumber Liquidators has rolled out its latest product catalog for the fall, which includes 60 new flooring choices and insights into new flooring trends.

"We continually stay on top of design trends from around the world and then work directly with major mills to ensure the lowest prices possible on the highest quality flooring," said president and CEO Robert Lynch.

So what's on tap for fall? Grayscale is one trend the industry may be seeing more of, with various shades of gray flooring cropping up in contemporary design schemes.

Universal Forest Products has a winner in its 2014 ProWood Desperate Deck Contest, a giveaway that promised a new custom-built deck to the person with the best "desperate deck" story.

Amy Spoonhower of Gordonsville, Virginia made the most compelling case. Together with her fiance, Spoonhower bought a moldy, leaky foreclosed house and worked on the fixer-upper for four years to restore it. However, the couple ran out of energy and money before they had a chance to touch up the decks, which were in a dismal state of disrepair.

The Window and Door Manufacturers Association's (2015) recently released Window and Entry Door 2014 U.S. Market Study shows continued growth for the residential window market through 2015. 

The study, prepared, researched and analyzed by Metrostudy and the Virginia Center for Housing Research at Virginia Tech, forecasts overall residential window market growth of 9.1% for 2014 and 8.3% for 2015. This follows market growth of 10% in 2013.

Dallas-based Builders FirstSource has purchased West Orange Lumber Company. The deal closed on July 31, 2014. West Orange was represented by The JIAN Group of Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Groveland, Florida-based West Orange supplies lumber, roof and floor trusses, custom windows and doors, as well as installation services, to residential home builders and commercial contractors in the Central Florida region. Sales were about $15 million for fiscal 2013.

Newport News, Virginia-based plumbing distributor Ferguson is building a new distribution center in Coxsackie, New York. The company has also leased property for a regional distribution hub in Secaucus, New Jersey.

The two facilities will house almost 1 million sq. ft. of warehouse space and will support Ferguson’s metro New York and Northeast branches, ensuring that customers receive product quickly.

Ferguson is the largest wholesale plumbing distributor in the United States.

James H. (Jim) Dudley, a veteran of 20 years in the treated lumber industry, has been named president of Fortress Wood Products, Inc., a division of The Lester Group based in Martinsville, Virginia.

Dudley joins Fortress from Culpeper Wood Preservers in Fredericksburg, Virginia, where he was vice president.

Fortress is a wood treating company producing wood for residential and commercial use from three plants in North Carolina--High Point, Henderson and Elizabeth City.

Herndon, Virginia-based Beacon Roofing Supply joined the long list of LBM-related companies to report a negative impact from severe winter weather.

Sales decreased 7.5% to $384.9 million during the company’s second quarter ended March 31. 

On an overall consolidated basis, residential roofing product sales decreased 12.1%, non-residential roofing product sales decreased 2.3%, and complementary product sales decreased 4.1%.

The 2014 deck-building season got off to a late start, and Trex felt the impact in its first-quarter results.

The Winchester, Virginia-based company reported net sales of $100.6 million, down from $107.9 million in last year's first quarter. Net income for the wood-alternative decking giant was $12.3 million, down from $21.6 million in the same period last year.

Ferguson, the largest wholesale plumbing distributor in the U.S., acquired Factory Direct Appliances.

Factory Direct Appliance is a seven-location appliance dealer with five showrooms in Kansas City, Mo., and two outlying locations in Des Moines, Iowa, and Omaha, Neb. 

The deal marks the second big acquisition of the year for Ferguson, which acquired Karl’s Appliance in February. Karl’s operates six showrooms in northern New Jersey.

Ace Hardware is celebrating the milestones it has reached within its supply chain in the aim of reducing its carbon footprint this Earth Day.

Specifically, two Ace Hardware Retail Support facilities are being recognized for their participation in zero landfill initiatives, which see to it that a product is reused instead of being sent to a landfill or incinerator. The Ace Hardware Import Redestribution Center in Suffolk, Va. has been enjoying zero landfill status for over a year, and the counterpart facility in Kent, Wash. is 95% of the way there.

Troy, Va.-based Red Rocker Candy is promoting its self-described "old-fashioned" style of candy for home improvement stores hoping to capture a niche in sweets. 

The company's Rocking Chair Mix, Cashew Toffee with White Chocolate, Solid Chocolate Dogwoods and Peppermint Bark are its big sellers, according to the supplier.

The company was founded on April 1, 2002. According to the company: "Red Rocker Candy products bring back the flavors and sentiment of times gone by."
