Farm and ranch retailer Runnings will soon occupy a Hopewell, N.Y., site formerly occupied by Walmart.

The shell had been vacant for seven years, according to a report in the Daily Messenger newspaper. 

Renovations will begin at the 92,000-sq.-ft. building at Eastern Boulevard and County Road 10 in the spring, with a targeted opening for the Runnings store in fall 2014.

Two Chinese-made blower vacuums, one sold at Home Depot and the other sold at Walmart, were recalled because they pose laceration hazards.

Walmart overcame a meager 1% same-stores sales increase at U.S. stores to deliver better-than-expected fourth-quarter profits.

The company said total sales increased 3.9% to $127.1 billion compared to $122.3 billion last year. Without the benefit of a favorable currency exchange situation, sales would have increased a lesser 3.7% to $126.8 billion. Full year sales increased by 5% to $466.1 billion compared to last year’s total of $443.8.

Chicago — Before the first speaker could take the podium at the Home Improvement Research Institute (HIRI) Fall Conference, a residential construction report for September stole the show with news of a 15.0% increase in total starts.

The tone was set. One presenter pointed to an average forecast of 924,000 starts in 2013, a figure drawn from 10 estimates ranging from a high of 1.1 million and a low of 800,000.

In its annual meeting with analysts on Wednesday, Wal-Mart Stores U.S. president Bill Simon said the retailer would accelerate small-store growth stores and announced plans to have 500 Neighborhood Market stores and 12 Express stores by fiscal 2016. The latter would measure, on average, 10,000 sq. ft. to 15,000 sq. ft.

“This gives us the opportunity to build more stores for less money," Simon said. Walmart currently operates 217 Neighborhood Markets and 10 Express stores.

Walmart has partnered with West Shore Window & Door, a regional installer of exterior building products, at its Harrisburg, Pa., store. According to an article in Closets Daily, West Shore will open a design center in the Harrisburg store where it will display its entire product line of windows, doors, siding and garage doors.
