Valley Forge, Pa.-based CertainTeed said it has achieved significant milestones in reducing the environmental impact at its 60-plus manufacturing facilities in North America.

Specifically, CertainTeed has reduced energy consumption by 15% and water usage by 24% over the past four years. In addition, it has decreased the amount of waste going to landfills from its facilities by 33%.

Archbold, Ohio-based WoodTrac Ceiling System by Sauder is promoting environmental standards, including recent energy conservation measures, mandating material recycling and air quality preservation. In addition to product production guidelines, the WoodTrac product features a unique “green” design that saves raw materials. 

According to Sauder Woodworking, more than 90% of the WoodTrac Ceiling product and packaging is made from recycled material.

Copper shoplifting is on the rise at home improvement stores across the country, but in the Fort Meyers, Fla., area, thieves may have come up with a novel way to steal the valuable metal. According to a story in the Fort Myers News Press, two men have been arrested for repeatedly shoplifting items from a Lowe’s store in Cape Coral, Fla., returning the items for store credit and then purchasing copper tubing, which they would sell to a recycling yard.

Scott Rhodes knew that for his innovative “dumpster in a bag” product — the Bagster — to make an impact in the home channel, it was imperative to forge relationships with major dealers.


“We knew we needed a national footprint to expand our retail distribution with Home Depot and Lowe’s,” said Rhodes, co-founder of the product and now a director at Waste Management Inc., the parent company. Bagster is Waste Management’s first retail product.

RONA, the largest Canadian retailer of hardware, renovation, and gardening products, has expanded their in-store paint recovery and recycling program to British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. RONA says it's now the first retailer to collect and recycle old and unused household paints from consumers in Western Canada.

A new state law that requires carpet manufacturers to add five cents to every square yard of carpeting sold or shipped into California went into effect on July 1. The purpose of the new fee is to incentivize carpet recycling and encourage the production of products made from recycled carpets.

Insulfoam, producer of engineered expanded polystyrene (EPS) block-molded insulation products, expanded into western Pennsylvania. Manufacturing is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2011 in a 200,000 square-foot facility, located in Smithfield, Pa.

Insulfoam will share the plant with sister company Hunter Panels.

The vast majority of consumers are not recycling their compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs, and the result is tons of mercury released into the environment, according to an article in the Contra Costa Times. Statistics provided by the Association of Lighting and Mercury Recyclers estimate that only 2% of consumers and one-third of businesses recycle CFL bulbs.

Medina, Minn.-based Rockler Woodworking and Hardware introduced a Protective Bench Mat made from 100% recycled rubber tires. The three-millimeter thick mat measures 24 in. by 60 in.; protects the tops of work benches; and saves tools and projects from the scratches, dings and dents associated with general labor tasks in a shop.

Vienna, Austria-based Mondi industrial Bags developed its Green Range line of industrial bags to help support the sustainability agenda of customers across multiple industries.

"Waste prevention, re-usage, recycling and composting will be the key words for sustainable packaging in the future," the company said in a prepared statement.

CraftMaster molded door designs and full line of solid core CraftMaster Green Doors have been certified by Scientific Certification Services (SCS) to contain a minimum of 70% pre-consumer recycled wood content.

CMI uses sawmill chips generated as residual waste from sawmill operations and field chips to make CraftMaster door designs, which are used to make CraftMaster Green Doors.

Mooresville, N.C.-based Lowe’s announced today it has installed recycling centers in 1,700 stores in the continental United States.

The new centers offer a free and convenient way for customers to recycle rechargeable batteries, cell phones, CFLs and plastic shopping bags in an easy-to-use bin near the store entrance the company said.
