BlueLinx Holdings has announced that George R. Judd will no longer serve as president and chief executive, effective May 14, 2013. Judd will also resign as a director of BlueLinx following the 2013 Annual Meeting of Stockholders on May 16.

The board has appointed Howard S. Cohen to serve as executive chairman, while the board conducts a search for a successor to Judd. Cohen has been a director of the company since 2007 and has served as chairman of the board since 2008.

Home Depot will invest $157 million (MXN $2 billion) to enlarge its presence in Mexico in 2013, according to a news report in Economista. Part of the funds will be used to buy land for new stores, which will total 100 by the end of 2012.

Home Depot Mexico chairman Ricardo Saldivar told Economista that the Atlanta-based retailer hopes to double its current number of units in the future, which sets its goal at 200 stores.

William Fondren, who has served as chairman of Orgill board of directors since January 2005, has announced his retirement effective Dec. 31, 2012.

Fondren spent 24 years as Orgill’s president and CEO, leading the Memphis, Tenn.-based from a regional distributor serving the Midsouth to one of the industry’s largest independent hardlines distributors, with retail customers in all 50 states, throughout Canada and in more than 60 countries around the world.

Christian Miller Snavely, Jr., the chairman emeritus of Snavely Forest Products , World War II veteran and past chairman of the North American Wholesale Lumber Association died Oct. 24. He was 88.

Snavely is remembered by friends and colleagues as a generous and well-respected business leader. He was elected chairman of the industry trade association, NAWLA, which honored him with the prestigious Mulrooney Award for outstanding contributions to the forest products industry.

Window and door manufacturer Andersen has named Jay Lund, its president and CEO since March 2011, as its new chairman of the board. Lund will replace chairman Jim Humphrey, who officially retires from his board role on Feb. 22, 2013, as part of a planned transition. Humphrey joined Andersen in 1999, served as president and CEO from 2003 to 2011 and was named chairman of the board in February 2008. He joined Andersen following a 31-year career at Armstrong World Industries.

A. O. Smith's board of directors has announced Paul Jones will transition from chairman and CEO to executive chairman, effective Jan. 1, 2013. Ajita Rajendra will assume the role of president and CEO.

Home Depot executives, in two published interviews, discussed the Atlanta retailer’s views on expansion south of the U.S. border and beyond.

Ricardo Saldivar, chairman Home Depot Mexico, told El Financiero that the Mexican division expects to end this year with 100 stores in 58 cities. Currently there are 94 stores in Mexico. More than nine out of 10 Home Depot store openings take place in Mexico, Saldivar said.

This is the largest one-month gain recorded by the index in nearly a decade, and brings the HMI to its highest point -- 35 -- since March 2007.

Valspar Corp. has announced that its board of directors elected Gary Hendrickson, Valspar’s president and CEO, as chairman of the board, effective immediately. Hendrickson succeeds William Mansfield, who is retiring after serving as chairman since August 2007, as CEO from 2005 to 2011, and as president from 2005 to 2008.

The appointment completes a transition plan put in place a year ago, according to the Minneapolis-based paint and coatings manufacturer.

The National Association of Home Builders’ (NAHB) Remodeling Market Index (RMI) decreased one point to 47 from the upwardly revised 48 in the previous quarter.

In the first quarter, the RMI component measuring current market conditions dropped one point to 49, while the component measuring future indicators of remodeling business fell two points to 44.

The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and a Chinese trade group have signed a major exhibition agreement that will bring a large number of additional manufacturers and products to the annual NAHB International Builders' Show in Las Vegas in January 2013.

A formal signing ceremony was held April 19 in Foshan, China, between officials from the China Building Ceramics & Sanitaryware Association and NAHB's immediate past chairman Bob Nielsen, a home builder and developer in Reno, Nev., and Mark Pursell, NAHB senior VP for exhibitions, marketing and sales.

Builder confidence in the market for newly built, single-family homes declined for the first time in seven months this April, sliding three notches to 25 on the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB)/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index. The decline brings the index back to where it was in January, which was the highest level since 2007.
