Employer representatives have testified before a congressional panel that they support the expansion of the federal government’s E-Verify electronic employment verification system, which experts agree will be a central piece of comprehensive immigration reform.

Christian Miller Snavely, Jr., the chairman emeritus of Snavely Forest Products , World War II veteran and past chairman of the North American Wholesale Lumber Association died Oct. 24. He was 88.

Snavely is remembered by friends and colleagues as a generous and well-respected business leader. He was elected chairman of the industry trade association, NAWLA, which honored him with the prestigious Mulrooney Award for outstanding contributions to the forest products industry.

A. O. Smith's board of directors has announced Paul Jones will transition from chairman and CEO to executive chairman, effective Jan. 1, 2013. Ajita Rajendra will assume the role of president and CEO.

Jones will continue to lead the company’s board of directors as the executive chairman and will remain involved in the company’s strategy development, mergers and acquisitions, investor relations, and developing executive talent for the Milwaukee-based water technology company.

Rallying the troops during the Ace Fall Convention and Exhibits, chairman Dave Ziegler showed the early morning general session audience a video clip of Ace COO John Venhuizen wielding a Home Channel News magazine.

In the magazine was a quote from a Home Depot executive about leading the industry in convenience and service. Venhuizen responded by channeling defiant former NRA spokesman Charlton Heston: Ace will relinquish the title of most convenient “when they can peel it out of our cold dead hands.”

The S&P/Case Shiller Home Price Indeces showed positive annual growth rates in three key metrics for the first time since the summer of 2010.

“Home prices gained in the second quarter,” said David M. Blitzer, chairman of the Indx Committee at S&P Dow Jones Indices. “In this month’s report, all three composites and all 20 cities improved both in June and through the entire second quarter of 2012.”

Valspar Corp. has announced that its board of directors elected Gary Hendrickson, Valspar’s president and CEO, as chairman of the board, effective immediately. Hendrickson succeeds William Mansfield, who is retiring after serving as chairman since August 2007, as CEO from 2005 to 2011, and as president from 2005 to 2008.

The appointment completes a transition plan put in place a year ago, according to the Minneapolis-based paint and coatings manufacturer.

The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and a Chinese trade group have signed a major exhibition agreement that will bring a large number of additional manufacturers and products to the annual NAHB International Builders' Show in Las Vegas in January 2013.

A formal signing ceremony was held April 19 in Foshan, China, between officials from the China Building Ceramics & Sanitaryware Association and NAHB's immediate past chairman Bob Nielsen, a home builder and developer in Reno, Nev., and Mark Pursell, NAHB senior VP for exhibitions, marketing and sales.
