WOLF's Key Buyer Index dropped notably in November, though the measure of dealer sentiment is still several points higher than it was last year.

WOLF's Key Buyer Index dropped notably in November, though the measure of dealer sentiment is still several points higher than it was last year.

The November 2014 KBI score of 55.45 was down from October's figure of 59.39, a drop that WOLF attributes to winter weather concerns.

The overall drop in sentiment largely comes from the Southeast region of the U.S., where the KBI dropped 16 points upon a sputtering remodeling sector. Here, kitchen and bath products dropped to a score of 56.67 and building products were at 35, the lowest level of the year for the category.

Sean Fogarty is stepping into the role of president of the West Coast Lumber & Building Material Association.

Fogarty is VP of Osborne Lumber in Newark, California, where he represents the third generation of the family business that opened in 1950. 

During the organization’s annul convention last week in Indian Wells, California, Fogarty encouraged the industry to stick together and stay involved.

A slower-than-anticipated housing market hasn’t stopped Raleigh, North Carolina-based Stock Building Supply from growing sales and earnings in the third quarter.

The pro dealer reported net sales of $354.1 million, up 7.8% from the same quarter last year. Net income swung to a profit of $5.0 million, compared to a net loss of $5.5 million in the prior-year period.

At least one industry analyst thinks that the outlook for lawn and garden involves a lot of green, upward-pointing thumbs.

GE Capital’s Commercial Distribution Finance business, which provides financing to the industry, predicts good things ahead. Even though 2014 saw its fair share of weather disruptions, dealer financing volume is up 9% year-over-year in the United States and 12% in Canada, according to company data.

Pro-sales lumber and building materials dealer TW Perry has opened the doors to its newly expanded Springfield store and office space, which now boasts a new showroom.

The Springfield location is now more than double the size of the original, with the office space moved up to a new second floor, complete with a conference room for meetings.

The 3,800-sq-.ft showroom features a range of windows, doors, moulding profiles, decking and architectural millwork on display from the TW Perry custom millshop.

Knoxville, Tennessee-based House-Hasson Hardware is rolling out “Dollar House,” a merchandise and sales program to enable dealers to compete with Dollar General, Family Dollar, and Dollar Tree stores, the company said.

“Dollar House” will be introduced to House-Hasson dealers at the company’s upcoming Oct. 9-11 dealer market in Sevierville, Tennessee, at the Sevierville Events Center.

Monroe, North Carolina-based Monroe Hardware’s Fall Dealer Market showed strong sales and attendance gains, according to event organizers.

Held at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center Sept. 20-21, the event spotlight fell on exhibit areas ranging from Made in the USA products to impulse-counter displays. 

Both customer attendance and sales were up over 40%, according to event organizers. Vendor and booth counts were up more than 15%

The West Coast Lumber & Building Material Association continues to offer guidance to pro dealer members in the wake of a$1.6 million Lowe’s settlement regarding alleged violations of dimensional lumber descriptions.

In a letter to members from WCLBMA executive director Ken Dunham offered advice on how to avoid run-ins with the state agencies when it comes to labeling and advertising products.

Port Washington, New York-based PACOA just got back from its Annual Fall Dealer Market in Queens, and according to the distributor, it was one for the books.

This year's event boasted "record-breaking" attendance and sales, driven largely by the attendance of some big names in paint, hardware and lumber, according to PACOA.

Several new vendors were also on-hand, including GACO, Dickies, Chapin, Frog Tape, ZEP and more.

More than 200 manufacturers participated in the Fall Dealer Market, offering competitive promotions and new product glimpses.

Aurora, Ill.-based LBM dealer Alexander Lumber Co. named Russell Kathrein as CEO and president.

Kathrein has 25 years of experience in the lumber and building material industry, including senior management positions at 84 Lumber, BMC West, and most recently, ProBuild.

Alexander Lumber operates 20 yards in Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin, along with two truss plants and a counter-top facility.

Builders FirstSource achieved its highest sales level since 2006 as it swung to a profit in the second quarter ended June 30.

The Dallas-based pro dealer reported sales of $426.5 million, up 7.1% from the same quarter last year. Net income was $10.6 million, compared to a net loss of $48 million in the first quarter last year.

Knoxville, Tenn.-based House-Hasson Hardware says its June 19-21 dealer broke all previous records for attendance, attracting some 2,300 to 2,400 people.

“We sold more of every product,” said Don Hasson, president. “People are feeling better about the economy, and when they feel better they buy more. That means dealers are buying products looking to the next six months rather than the next few weeks.”
