The Dallas-based pro dealer reported sales of $319.7 million for the first quarter ended March 31, up 45.7%

Dallas-based Builders FirstSource saw sales surge in the first quarter -- up 45.7% to $319.7 million.

"We were able to achieve top-line growth of greater than 30% for a sixth consecutive quarter," said CEO Floyd Sherman. "Our sales increase once again exceeded the increase in residential construction activity, as actual single-family housing starts in the South Region increased 27.4% and single-family units under construction increased 23.2%."

Cascade, Iowa-based Cascade Lumber Company, a family-owned and operated retail lumberyard, is celebrating its 60th year of operation in 2013. Operating from a single location in eastern Iowa, Cascade Lumber operates a lumberyard in addition to a full-service home center serving retail and contactor customers. In addition, floor covering sales and installation are conducted from the Cascade location and a second outlet in nearby Monticello, Iowa.

In West Virginia, a veteran-oriented charity mud run received a lumber donation from 84 Lumber.

The West Virginia University Army ROTC “Wild Warrior Challenge” is one of those endurance test mud runs with a twist -- all proceeds go to veterans organizations.

This year’s race received a boost from 84 Lumber, which provided $2,000 worth of lumber to construct the course, according to an article on WBOY.com

Houston-based hardlines co-op Handy Hardware Wholesale submitted papers for their much-anticipated plan of reorganization March 6.

The 1,300-member regional co-op filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January. Whether Handy can return to its place as a meaningful and profitable player in the hardware business remains to be seen. This much is certain: What was once $27 million in member equity in Class A and Class B shares has vanished.

Knoxville, Tenn.-based House-Hasson Hardware will bring thousands of visitors to East Tennessee as its largest annual event comes to resort town of Sevierville.

House-Hasson, self-described as the “nation’s largest independent regional hardware distributor,” expects some 600 to 800 hardware store owners and their families to attend the June 20-22 event. The event will be headquartered at the Wilderness at the Smokies Resort in Sevierville.

Las Vegas — In the not-too-distant future, 84 Lumber sees itself giving its potential customers two bids — one regular bid, and one bid consisting exclusively of American-made products.

When it happens, builders may be surprised at the similarity in total costs, according to Jeff Nobers, VP marketing for the Eighty Four, Pa.-based pro dealer.

The all-American bid system is one of the ideas stemming from 84 Lumber's new initiative to encourage builders and consumers to buy American when building — called "We Build American."

Las Vegas -- During the BMC National Meeting here at the M Resort, the Boise, Idaho-based pro dealer stressed team building and education.

BMC also identified outstanding individual performances. The 88-unit pro dealer recognized Christopher Cysensky as Platinum Salesman of the Year. Cysensky is the outside sales representative for the Pacific Northwest, working in the company's Tacoma, Wash., location. The performance-based award was given Tuesday night during the Sales Awards Ceremony and Dinner.

Dunn Lumber, an 11-unit pro dealer based in Seattle, has added Parker Lumber to its chain of  lumberyards. Now called Parker Lumber East, the Bothell, Wash., unit is located near Dunn’s Mill Creek location.

Founded in 1869, the company is owned and operated by the third and fourth generation of the Dunn family. It ranked No. 63 on the 2012 Pro Dealer Scoreboard.

Las Vegas -- Memphis, Tenn.-based distributor Orgill recently signed a distribution agreement with BMC, supplying hardlines to the Boise, Idaho-based pro dealer.

The distribution and services deal was signed late last year, and replaces BMC's similar distribution agreement with True Value Corp. The transition is in its early stages, according to both Orgill and BMC.

Orgill is making its first appearance at the BMC National Meeting and trade show in Las Vegas Jan. 8-11.
