Visalia, Calif.-based Shannon Ranch Elementary School has won the top prize of $7,000 in the Toro Company's 'Ready. Set. GROW!' grant program.

Nominations for the contest were submitted in September, after which a panel of judges selected four finalists, who were then asked to submit a video detailing their mission. Toro left it up to the public to vote for the winning finalist in November.

There wasn’t a lot of media attention on Reading, Kan., last week, when a tornado touched down on the night of May 21 and wiped out most of the town. The press corps was focused on Joplin, Mo., and Reading (rhymes with bedding) is a small farming community: Approximately 230 people were living in 40 homes; Reading Elementary School only has about 67 students.

Ace Hardware in Oak Creek, Wis., has teamed with a local elementary school and a national charity to find shoes for the needy, according to an article in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Since 2005, Soles4Souls has distributed more than 12 million pairs of shoes. The hardware store is collecting gently used shoes, as is the nearby school.
