Universal Forest Products has a winner in its 2014 ProWood Desperate Deck Contest, a giveaway that promised a new custom-built deck to the person with the best "desperate deck" story.

Amy Spoonhower of Gordonsville, Virginia made the most compelling case. Together with her fiance, Spoonhower bought a moldy, leaky foreclosed house and worked on the fixer-upper for four years to restore it. However, the couple ran out of energy and money before they had a chance to touch up the decks, which were in a dismal state of disrepair.

Hardwood flooring company Lumber Liquidators has donated one of its Dura Dance flooring systems to the Cincinnati, Ohio-based Highsteppers Drill Team as part of its Lay It Forward charity campaign.

The 15-year-old drill team recently moved into a new space, but didn’t have a proper floor, which led to Lumber Liquidators installing the Dura Dance system, which features underlying rubber to reduce impact and absorb energy.

Flashlight company Olympia unveiled a new line of flashlights and headlamps, as well as two-way radios, solar chargers and rechargeable batteries at this year’s Outdoor Retailer Show in Salt Lake City. The new products are focused on energy efficiency.

Muskegon, Michigan-based energy-efficient lighting company EarthTronics has named Tripp Smith to the post of VP sales. Smith brings over 30 years of lighting experience to bear on his new role, in which he will be charged with increasing sales opportunities and profit, as well as expanding market share in North America.

Over 22 years of his career were spent at GE Lighting, where he performed in various sales and leadership capacities in the company's retail and commercial lighting businesses.

Massachusetts-based lighting company Osram Sylvania announced that it would be expanding it’s lineup of LED light bulbs. This month, Lowe’s will start stocking the seven new bulbs.

Among the company’s new LED bulb offerings are the ones meant to replace 40- and 60-watt incandescent bulbs. The 60-watt LED bulb puts out the same amount of light as a 60-watt incandescent with 8.5 watts of electricity.

Between 2000 and 2010, Newman managed sales and operations for Genesis Insulation Inc./Energy Efficient Consulting. He also has additional administrative experience working for Cross-Man Holdings, where he was project manager for tenant improvement, and also provided budget management services.

KB Home is launching a pilot program for a set of new energy storage solutions, developed in collaboration with SunPower Corp., in its Irvine, El Dorado Hills and San Diego markets.

The new high-efficiency solar power systems store solar energy by day and offer an alternative energy source for use during power outages or other situations.

Whirlpool Corporation has earned the first and only (for now) Energy Star certification for the clothes dryer category, now on the market as the Duet model WED87HED steam dryer.

The Duet dryer combines moisture sensors with dual element modulation technology to arrive at an energy-efficient drying cycle that uses no more heat (and runs for no more time) than is required. Beyond conserving energy, it also helps preserve fabrics.

KB Home opened a brand new KB Home Design Studio in the Sacramento area, 

The Roseville, California, facility is described as a retail-like showroom where home shoppers can explore design choices, energy-efficient features and sophisticated home automation technologies.

Roseville is also home to two new KB Home communities, Aria and Legato at Westpark, which both celebrated grand openings this spring.

The home improvement industry called Las Vegas home for three days in May. That’s when the National Hardware Show was in town, kicking off with a marching band and confetti explosion on Tuesday morning May 6.

The National Hardware Show cleverly promoted itself as 15 shows in 1 in 2014, with new areas of emphasis — emergency preparedness and energy efficiency among them. The event’s popular Tailgate section, which has grown steadily over the years, was back with more activities, and a soon-to-be announced Tailgate product of the year.

East Cleveland, Ohio-based GE Lighting says it has introduced its most incandescent-like consumer LED portfolio yet, including more than 40 new LED products and fixtures.

The company also says it is helping the homeowner fill every socket in the house with the appropriate, low-energy bulb.

Ace Hardware is celebrating the milestones it has reached within its supply chain in the aim of reducing its carbon footprint this Earth Day.

Specifically, two Ace Hardware Retail Support facilities are being recognized for their participation in zero landfill initiatives, which see to it that a product is reused instead of being sent to a landfill or incinerator. The Ace Hardware Import Redestribution Center in Suffolk, Va. has been enjoying zero landfill status for over a year, and the counterpart facility in Kent, Wash. is 95% of the way there.

GE is behind the latest eco-forward move in San Francisco -- specifically, that of the iconic 16-ft. crab wheel at the gateway of Fisherman's Wharf.

Together with the Arrow Sign Company, GE helped restore the landmark with new LED sign lighting systems that will save an estimated 80% in lighting energy usage.

The Home Depot has earned a 2014 Energy Star Partner of the Year -- Sustained Excellence award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which cited its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the promotion of energy-efficient products.

"Our customers are increasingly looking for products that have earned the Energy Star," said Ron Jarvis, VP Environmental. "Our partnership with Energy Star allows us to offer our customers high quality, energy-efficient products that will also save them money on their energy bills."

Faber is introducing two new cooker hood models -- which go by the name of Infinity ACT and Jolie ACT -- at Eurocucina 2014.

Both models feature Sil-K ACT, a technology that actively reduces perceived noise in pursuit of maximum silence, according to the company.

The technology, adapted from systems used in the aeronautics and automotive industries, creates an inverse wave form to cancel out the original one, which eliminates acoustic perceptions and cuts emissions by 13 decibels compared to another model of the same capacity.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recognized Panasonic Eco Solutions North America as a 2014 Energy Star Partner of the Year -- Sustained Excellence Award.

Panasonic's energy-efficient ventilation fans are the star of the day, which Panasonic assures will meet designed airflow requirements when installed, providing ventilation verification assurance. At up to 23.3 CFM/Watt, the fans have the highest efficacy of any Energy Star-rated ventilation fan.

Ringdale, Inc, the Georgetown, Texas-based ActiveLED manufacturer, has launched a new LED exterior luminary called the ActiveLED Horseshoe Bay Lantern.

The post-top fixture is an enery-efficient, high-performance alternative to 150-watt lamps, with energy savings of 50-80% compared to other solutions, the company says.

"At Ringdale, we are seeing an evolution in LED projects," said president Klaus Bollmann. "Customers that were once focused on changing out primary lighting are now converting more specialized or decorative lighting areas."
