A new front opened in the trade war against China when a group of U.S. plywood manufacturers filed a petition with the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. International Trade Commission. The Coalition for Fair Trade of Hardwood Plywood (CFTHP) claimed that Chinese manufacturers are “dumping” plywood on the U.S. market at unfair prices, a practice enabled by subsidies from the government of China.

American Builders Supply (ABS), an independent supplier of doors, windows and trusses to home builders in Florida, has appointed Ben Phillips to its board of directors. Phillips was most recently the chief operating officer at Fidelity Devonshire Investors, part of Fidelity Capital, the parent company of ProBuild. Before that, he spent several years at ProBuild, serving as executive VP and chief operating officer.

San Marcos, Texas-based McCoy’s Building Supply announced plans to open its first new location since 2007, with a store in Taylor, Texas. 

The store will mark the regional company’s 84th unit overall as it celebrates its 85th anniversary.

Baillie Lumber, the Hamburg, N.Y.-based producer of hardwood lumber, has purchased Wagner Lumber of Owego, N.Y. The purchase price was not disclosed.

According to its website, Wagner Lumber is the largest manufacturer of hardwood lumber in the northeast United States, with an annual total production of 60 million board feet. It operates three sawmills and one log yard in New York State.

Seattle, Wash.-based Dunn Lumber is now stocking a full line of Maze Nails, distributed by International Wood Products in all 10 Dunn stores.  

Maze Nails, based in Peru, Ill., is the largest manufacturer of specialty nails in the United States. Offerings include a full line of double hot dipped galvanized and stainless steel nails for fiber cement siding, decking, fencing, cedar shingles and shakes, cedar siding, post frame building, PVC trim products and other building applications.

A comprehensive testing of commercial produced Southern Pine has been completed, and as a result, the industry may see smaller reductions for the wider widths and higher grades of Southern Pine dimensional lumber as compared with the No.2 2x4s. Design values for visually graded Southern Pine lumber, including dense and non-dense grades, may also change.

With version 7.3.5 Service Pack 1, released June 28, 2012, users of Sapphire Structure can now specify onCENTER BLI Joists, onCENTER LVL and onCENTER Rim Board, and the MiTek Single Member Design Engine will analyze each member using material properties provided by BlueLinx.

Bill Myrick, the former CEO of ProBuild and chief operating officer of 84 Lumber, has been hired as CEO of American Builders Supply (ABS), a leading supplier of doors, windows, millwork and trusses to home builders in Florida. ABS, which is owned by Blue Wolf Capital Partners, has five Florida locations and has consolidated four leading independent competitors in the last 15 months.

The tax pitted retail lumber sellers against lumber producers by shifting fees the timber industry currently pays to its customers.

Dallas-based pro dealer Builders FirstSource has announced a new location in Clarksville, Tenn., approximately 40 miles northwest of Nashville. The facility is situated on five acres and includes a 25,000-sq.-ft. warehouse. It will offer lumber, engineered I-joist systems, roof and floor trusses, windows, doors, millwork and various other building products and materials. The scheduled opening date is in early June.

CEO Floyd Sherman said the company is looking forward to expanding its footprint in northern Tennessee and southern Kentucky.
