Walnut Creek, California-based Central Garden & Pet said it rebuffed acquisition offers from an investment group.

The marketer and producer of products for the lawn and garden and pet supplies markets, said that, after an extensive review, its board of directors unanimously concluded that it will not pursue two proposals received from Harbinger Group Inc. in June to acquire all of Central’s common stock at $10 per share in cash or, alternatively, to acquire the company's pet segment for $750 million in cash.

The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company has acquired Fafard and Brothers via its indirect subsidiary, Scotts Canada.

Quebec-based Fafard is a producer of peat moss and high-performance growing media products, such as peat-based and bark-based mixes, composts and premium soils. It also distributes various fertilizers, mulch and grass seed products.

Eagle Materials, producer of basic building materials from wallboard to cement, reported second quarter revenues of $266.3 million, up 17% from the same three-month period last year.

In the quarter, sales of gypsum wallboard increased 17% to $112.7 million. The company implemented a wallboard price increase effective January 2014 and recently announced a 15% price increase effective in January 2015.

The company’s total net earnings increased 25% to $37.7 million.

APA-The Engineered Wood Association announced that Thompson River Veneer Products, Kamloops, British Columbia, has been approved for membership by the APA Board of Trustees.

The company has been operating as a dry veneer supplier and plywood producer since 2006. It is the fourth Canadian plywood manufacturer to join APA in 2014. The transition to APA membership is effective Aug. 1.

Kamloops, British Columbia-based Thompson River Veneer Products Ltd., a dry veneer supplier and plywood producer, has joined the APA - The Engineered Wood Association.

The APA Board of Trustees approved the Canadian plywood manufacturer for membership, making it the fourth supplier of its kind to join the organization this year.

Bonham has approximately 30 years of experience under his belt in manufacturing, sales, marketing and e-business. His resume spans major companies such as GE, Allied Signal and Invensys plc. He has also opened manufacturing facilities and completed acquisitions both in the U.S. and abroad. In his most recent role, he served as president of Grace Construction Products.

A subsidiary of Universal Forest Products Inc. has agreed to purchase the assets of National Fiber, a Massachusetts-based producer of cellulose insulation.

With a strong presence in the Northeastern U.S., National Fiber distributes its Cel-Pak and Nu-Wool insulation, as well as installation machines, to professional cellulose installers in the region.

Boise Cascade Company has purchased Wood Resources LLC's Southeast Operations for $102 million.

The acquisition deal includes Chester, S.C.-based Chester Wood Products LLC, a producer of softwood plywood panels and veneer, as well as Moncure Plywood LLC, a flexible specialty plywood mill in Moncure, N.C.

Wood Resources had previously acquired the two entities in 2004 from Weyerhaeuser, at which time their prospects were uncertain. Financial performance and output has since improved.

Vulcan Materials Company, a producer of construction aggregates, asphalt mix, concrete and cement, has commenced mine development at a major new source of reserves in California.

The Azusa Rock Quarry, located east of Los Angeles in the San Gabriel Valley, contains over 100 million tons of quality granite aggregate, enough to help Vulcan supply California infrastructure projects for "decades to come," according to the company.

Central Garden & Pet anticipated lower quarterly results, and it got them.

The Walnut Creek, Calif.-based marketer and producer of branded products for the lawn and garden and pet supplies markets reported net sales of $494.1 million in the third quarter ended June 29, down 7% from the same quarter last year.

Net income was $13.7 million, down from $22.7 million in the same quarter last year.

Miami-based Costa Farms hired Hispanic writer Andrés Fortuño as “the voice for Costa Farms’ new Facebook page, Costa Farms en Español.

The plan is for Fortuño speak to the growing number of Hispanics who love to garden, said the company, which describes itself as “the largest producer of indoor plants in North America.”

A recovering housing market has the alternative-wood producer anticipating gains in 2013.

A recovering housing market has the alternative-wood producer Trex Co. anticipating gains in 2013. While fourth-quarter sales declined, the Winchester, Va.-based company narrowed its fourth-quarter loss and exceeded its internal expectations. 

Trex Co. posted fourth-quarter sales of $46.2 million, down from $51.5 million in the same quarter last year. The company also posted a loss of $3.6 million for the quarter, compared with a loss of $18.3 million in the same quarter last year.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says the British maker of D-Con products refused to adopt the agency's safety standards.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is moving to ban the sale of 12 d-CON mouse and rat poison products produced by Reckitt Benckiser because these products fail to comply with current EPA safety standards.
