Brentwood, Tennessee-based Tractor Supply Co. plans to open two pet-focused stores under the new “HomeTown Pet” brand.

The new pet supply retail concepts operated by Tractor Supply Company will open in mid November in Franklin and Fairview, cities within close proximity to the company’s headquarters.

Vista, California-based Eco Building Products says the company has expanded beyond the coating services business into selling finished goods. The company’s increasing level of inventory is being established to directly support special order business for The Home Depot retail locations active in the Northeast, and advanced framing lumber and panel products commonly used by Modular Home factories in and around the region, the company said.

Orlando, Florida -- With Internet sales growing faster than other channels across the U.S. retail scene, Ace Hardware rolled out a new Web-embracing deal for dealers.

In essence, retailers that sign up for Ace’s In-Store Pick Up service receive 100% profit on Internet sales, up from 70%.

Orlando, Florida – Ace’s current merchandise strategy is heavy on the paint department, but there were plenty of other categories making news in the 850,000 square feet of exhibits here at the Orange County Convention Center.

Ace Hardware VP Merchandising Frank Carroll, speaking during the General Session here at the 2014 Fall Ace Convention & Exhibits, described the market as “a retail wonderland” with paint leading the way.

The latest data for the month of August shows broad-based improvement for retail sales, with particularly strong performance among building supply dealers. 

The U.S. Census Bureau announced Friday morning that advance estimates of U.S. retail and food services sales for August were up 0.6% from July and up 5.0% from August 2013. 

The total number came in at $444.4 billion.

The Vendor Center president Darrell Wabschall said the recently announced alliance with PRO Group Inc. will improve the information flow between retailers, distributors and vendors.

PRO Group vendors will be able to use the secure business-to-business website to allow qualified independent retail members to access a wide range of vendor information including: pricing, catalogs, educational and demonstrational videos, and even order products online with all billing processing via the appropriate PRO Group distributors.

In HBO’s "Deadwood," set in the 1870s gold rush in South Dakota, Timothy Olyphant’s character, Sheriff Seth Bullock, and his partner own a hardware store selling picks, shovels and prospecting hardware to the miners coming into town hoping to strike it rich.

Atlanta, Georgia-based Levolor is adding to its Accordia Custom Cellular Shade product offerings, which hit Lowe's shelves exclusively on Aug. 28 and are due in other nationwide home improvement retail stores Oct. 1.

The Accordia portfolio, which currently spans more than 200 styles, will be expanded further with new color and fabric swatches.

New to the crop are the Heathered and Tree Bark collections, which feature hues such as buttercream, light fog, cherry blossom, marine, amethyst and bayleaf.

Sandy Kennedy, president of the Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA), has offered her two cents on the standoff surrounding the union negotiations at the West Coast ports.

Kennedy addressed a letter to the heads of the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), speaking on behalf of retailers who are experiencing uncertainty and instability over the ongoing conflict.

The Home Depot announced that current CEO Frank Blake will be passing the torch to Craig Menear this fall.

Menear, who is currently serving as president U.S. retail, will take over as CEO and president as of Nov. 1, 2014. He has also been elected to the company's board of directors, effective immediately.

The Toro Company declared that it was well on its way to meeting its previously stated 2014 goals upon the release of its third-quarter earnings report Thursday.

Sales for the quarter were up 11.3% year-over-year to what Toro referred to as a "record $567.5 million," riding a wave of strong retail demand across its various segments.

Net earnings of $50.0 million were also up in comparison to last year's $40.1 million.

On Wednesday morning, it was Lowe's turn to deliver strong quarterly earnigns.

And the Mooresville, North Carolina-based retail giant did just that. The company reported net earnings of $1.04 billion for the quarter ended Aug. 1, marking a 10.4% increase over the second quarter last year. Sales for the quarter were up 5.7% to $16.6 billion, as comparable-store sales were up 4.4%.

"We were able to recover most of the outdoor product sales missed in the first quarter due to unfavorable weather conditions," said Robert Niblock, president and CEO.

Charlotte, North Carolina-based Wastequip has hired Andrew Bardsley to the newly created role of VP retail for the Toter brand, in which he will be charged with leading the team's new Retail Business Unit.

With Bardsley in place, Toter's consumer business is poised to work toward its new long-term growth initiatives, including a move that will involve shifting all of its manufacturing operations to the U.S. Bardsley will be at the helm of Toter's "Made in America" initiative.

After several months of increases, U.S. retail sales fell flat in July as motor vehicles and parts sales fell 0.2%.

The Commerce Department reported advance estimates of U.S. retail and food services sales of $439.8 billion, adjusted for seasonal variation and holiday and trading-day differences. This compares to a preliminary estimate of $439.9 billion last month, though July's figure is up 3.7% year-over-year.

Additionally, total sales for the May through July 2014 period were up 4.2% over last year.

The solution is described as next-generation retail management software for independent retail businesses. Part of the improvement is a simplified user interface, the company said.

The national unemployment rate reversed its steady downward direction in July, ticking up slightly to 6.2% with the addition of 209,000 jobs, the Department of Labor reported.

However, a greater number of people entered the labor market last month, a sign that prospects could be improving for discouraged and long-term unemployed workers. July saw 741,000 discouraged workers, down by 247,000 year-over-year. However, the number of long-term unemployed, those employed part-time for economic reasons and the civilian labor force participation rate were little changed in July.
