After a volatile 2013, Handy Hardware is entering the new year with new ownership, new structure and a new emphasis on customer profits.

The Houston-based hardware distributor launched an initiative called “Profit Plus, the New face of Handy,” which encompasses business improvements and dealer programs.

“The Handy team and I want to thank our customers who stood buy us in 2013, and want them to know Handy’s ability to service our dealers has never been stronger,” said Doug Miller, CEO.

Lakewood, Colo.-based multichannel retailer Tool King made a successful transition for a brick-and-mortar retailer to online super store. Now it's exploring another frontier -- e-commerce service provider. 

“In crafting the technology we needed to expand our own company, we realized the infrastructure we created facilitates a powerful and unique online selling platform,” said Don Cohen, CEO of Tool King.

New London, N.C.-based Fiberon teamed with distributor Coastal Forest Products to deliver composite and PVC decking and railing products to lumberyards on Long Island and the eastern counties in New York, and all of New England.

“Coastal Forest Products is a trusted company serving New England,” said Doug Mancosh, president of Fiberon. “Their service footprint expands our distribution geography and increases our presence in these key markets."

Richmond Electric Supply Company, Inc. has been sold to RESCO Acquisition, an investment group comprised of RESCO’s recently appointed CEO, Mike Bourn, and other private investors for an undisclosed sum.

Darryl Harman, who founded the company in 1983, was the seller. Matrix Capital Markets Group served as the financial adviser to RESCO Acquisitions.

Scranton, Pa.-based AZEK Building Products signed a distribution deal with OrePac Building Products, a building materials wholesaler serving the West and Pacific Northwest.   

Under the agreement, OrePac’s Denver, Colo., and Salt Lake City, Utah, branches will offer the full line of premium, exterior AZEK products.  OrePac’s Denver branch covers Colorado, Eastern Wyoming, Northern New Mexico and the Scottsbluff area of Nebraska, while the Salt Lake City branch covers Utah, Southwestern Wyoming, Eastern Nevada and Southeastern Idaho.

But the Portland, Maine-based wholesaler also used its spring market to unveil the company’s new rebranding initiative.

A retailer who spent three decades working at Mazur’s Discount store chain has joined forces with a wholesaler to open a new hardware store outlet in Birmingham, Ala., according to an article in the Birmingham News.

Home and Hardware Outlet, which opened in early October, is co-owned by Keith Russell, who operates a wholesale business in Pelham, and Danny Lambert, who left a position as head of purchasing at Mazer's Avondale store five years ago and opened his own outlet store, Lake Home Center, in Pell City in 2007.

Cedar Creek Wholesale, a building material distributor based in Oklahoma City, has agreed to purchase Wholesale Wood Products of Dothan and Birmingham, Ala. Financial details of the transaction were not revealed.

Wholesale Wood Products serves five southeastern states from two locations in Alabama and specialized in western red cedar and cypress. 

Cedar Creek has 12 locations in 17 states across the Midwest, Mid-south and Southeast.

Danks, the hardware wholesaler that Lowe's and Woolworths took over last year, acquired Canberra, Australia-based Magnet Mart.

The five Magnet Mart stores, which are located in Australian Capital Territory and New South Wales, will be operated by Danks as company-owned stores and will retain their name.
