Indianapolis -- Rich Lynch, who was named VP of marketing for Fort Wayne, Ind.-based Do it Best Corp. back in March, said he learned some valuable lessons about retail from his teenage years as a hardware store employee -- and also from his years as a marketing executive for Jim Beam.

Lynch met with the media here during the co-op's May Market. And with the words "helping members grow" stitched into his shirt sleeve, he talked about the importance of staying ahead of society's online movement and balancing all the "ingredients" of a successful hardware store.

Harry Barton, a worker at Knight Lumber in Beverly, Mass., retired last week on his 82nd birthday. It was his second attempt at retirement; the first one, at age 65, lasted less than a day. “I was bored,” Barton recalled.

A Lowe’s employee was killed in a storage facility in Charlotte, N.C., right across the parking lot from one of the retailer’s stores, according to an article in the Charlotte Observer. The 35-year-old man was standing under a garage door when it suddenly fell and hit him on the head at 11 a.m. on June 4.

Federal authorities are looking into a fatal accident that occurred at a Lowe’s store in Enterprise, Ala., the company has confirmed. The victim, who has not been identified, was pinned between a delivery truck and a trailer and was airlifted to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. 

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is investigating the incident. Karen Cobb, a spokeswoman for Lowe’s, said the cause has
