On Wednesday morning, it was Lowe's turn to deliver strong quarterly earnigns.

And the Mooresville, North Carolina-based retail giant did just that. The company reported net earnings of $1.04 billion for the quarter ended Aug. 1, marking a 10.4% increase over the second quarter last year. Sales for the quarter were up 5.7% to $16.6 billion, as comparable-store sales were up 4.4%.

"We were able to recover most of the outdoor product sales missed in the first quarter due to unfavorable weather conditions," said Robert Niblock, president and CEO.

Topping the list of appliance retailers up for review, hhgregg was honored with the highest score (of 819) in the J.D. Power Appliance Retailer Customer Satisfaction Study.

The annual J.D. Power survey uses criteria such as sales staff, merchandise, price and installation service to measurecustomer satisfaction with some of the country's largest appliance retailers. This year's study surveyed more than 2,900 customers who purchased a laundry or kitchen appliance in the previous 12 months.

The Home Depot’s President of U.S. Retail Craig Menear had plenty of positive numbers to discuss from a merchandising standpoint after the company reported comp-store sales growth of 5.8% in the second quarter.

All three U.S. divisions had positive comps, and also beat their sales plan, Menear said. Additionally, all departments had positive comps for the quarter, in which Home Depot reported sales of $23.8 billion.

Cary, North Carolina-based Ply Gem signed a deal with Fortune Brands Home & Security to acquire Simonton Windows.

The deal is valued at about 10 times Simonton’s earnings before interests, taxes, depreciation and amortization — about $130 million — and is expected to take close in October. Simonton’s annual revenues are more than $300 million.

Ply Gem will also acquire SimEx, a vinyl and PVC foam extrusion manufacturing plant in West Virginia, as part of the deal with Fortune Brands.

Benjamin Moore & Co. is buffing up its West Coast presence with the opening of a new distribution center in Oakland, California.

The Oakland DC -- what is now known as the Goodman Logistics Center -- will support the full line of Benjamin Moore products and will eventually serve as the key distribution center for retailers and distributors in the Asia Pacific region.

Benjamin Moore also announced plans to expand its operations in the Southeast later this year, as well as in the Mid-Atlantic region by mid-2015.

Housing starts more than made up for lost ground in July, rising 15.7% over June's upwardly revised estimate to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,093,000.

On a year-over-year basis, this represents a 21.7% improvement over July 2013's rate of 898,000.

June's progress was also not as poor as previously reported, standing at an upwardly revised estimate of 945,000 (compared to an original estimate of 893,000).

Haier America announced Paul Riley has been appointed VP sales and marketing for major appliances.

Riley will be accountable for the creation and exectuion of the go-to-market strategy for all categories, the company announced.

Riley has held many sales and marketing roles throughout his 15-year career with GE Appliances, where he most recently worked as senior brand and product line marketing manager. He also led tGE's efforts to redefine the Monogram brand through a preferred builder program, a consumer facing rebate program and brand distribution strategy.

Home Depot's net earnings crossed the $2 billion mark in the second quarter, as spring business for the world's largest home improvement retailer rebounded along with core departments.

Net earnings of $2.050 billion were up 14.2% from the same quarter last year. Net sales rose 5.7% to $23.811 billion. Comparable store sales were positive 5.8% -- and positive 6.4% for U.S. stores.

With Bardsley in place, Toter's consumer business is poised to work toward its new long-term growth initiatives, including a move that will involve shifting all of its manufacturing operations to the U.S. Bardsley will be at the helm of Toter's "Made in America" initiative.

Husqvarna Group division Husqvarna Professional Products has announced its decision to discontinue the Dixon brand name in North America.

That means Dixon's zero-turn mowers, walk-behind mowers and tractors will bow out from the market, though Husqvarna plans to manufacture similar products under alternative brands.
